The Irish Chess Union is pleased to announce that Ireland will be hosting a four nations Junior Chess Tournament in July 2011 involving teams from Ireland as hosts and England, Scotland and Wales. Formal invitations to compete in the tournament have recently issued to the Chess federations of the three overseas nations.

The events are as follows:

Each event will be played over three days from July 20th to 22nd 2011 in the "HUB" Dublin City University (DCU) and will involve six rounds of matches with the four nations playing each other twice in each event with colours reversed for the second match. The tournament will be FIDE rated.

The Glorney Cup is one of the oldest international junior chess events in the World having first taken place in 1948. The Gilbert Cup (formerly the Faber Cup) dates from the 1960s, while the other two events are of a more recent vintage. They provide a platform for Ireland's most promising junior players to compete against their peers from our nearest neighbours in England, Scotland and Wales.

The preparatory work required for the planning and successful hosting of the tournament is well underway and will involve a major commitment of the ICU’s time and financial resources over the coming months. It is envisaged that Irish teams will be selected by reference to the May 2011 rating list, but in the meantime, coaching for the junior players in contention for selection is being arranged.

Details of previous tournaments in the series can be found elsewhere on this website.
