IM Alex Lopez successfully defended his Mulcahy chess tournament title again. Finishing on 5½ from six games he was never really under pressure and remained on board one for all games. Alex has competed in nine Mulcahy tournaments since its resurgence in 2004 and has managed to win it each time he participated.
Hoping to put a "spanner in the works" for the 46th Mulcahy was Swedish player Michael de Verdier (2385) and current under 19 Irish champion Hugh Doyle (2077). However it was not to be as Alex quickly outplayed Hugh Doyle in round 4 and then in round 5 accepted the draw offer from de Verdier after 24 moves in a Bogo-Indian defence game. In round six Alex beat Cork youngster Keegan O'Mahony (1867) to take the Mulcahy and also the Munster Individual Championship which was being run in conjunction with the Mulcahy tournament.
Some surprise results in the tournament were the draws procured by Adam Deane (974) against Patrick O'Sullivan (1717) and Anthony Marino (unrated) against Peter Lynch (1447) and the wins obtained by Sarah Hearne (1523) against number four seed Stephen Short (1961) and by unrated David Geaney- O'Brien against Daniel Cashin (1374).
