Austin de Burca

Austin de Burca (Galway Uni) was born in Waterford and won the Irish Title in the early 50's but it’s not known if a club was in existence back then.

The Waterford Chess Club of 2014

The current club started back in the mid sixties and I have been a member since then. We played in the Leinster League, the O Hanlon Cup, for several years until we entered the Munster League. The club has a strong membership and we had teams in Div 1 and 2. We won Div 1 in the eighties.

National tournaments hosted in Waterford

We held the first October Bank Holiday weekender in 1978 and for a time was one the strongest in Ireland. The first tournament was won by Eamon Keogh who beat Bernard Kernan in the final round. Tom Sullivan was the controller and the old card system was used to make the draw! This weekender lasted for several years. We recently ran two tournaments but due to lack of sponsorship we could not continue.

Chess in Waterford Schools

Chess was introduced to 10 Primary Schools in the recent past. Club members have supported all national tournaments and continue to do so. We currently have 16 members and meet weekly in The Mansion, Johnstown Waterford City every Wed at 8.30 pm.
