Manorhamilton hosts Huge Schools Chess Competition

Manorhamilton’s junior chess scene witnessed a new record attendance at their latest tournament in the Bee park community centre on Friday the 29th of January. A rainy morning saw the main hall packed to capacity with excited primary school children battling each other with the white and black pieces. Eight local schools brought a total of 220 kids, 14 more than last year’s big event. John Conlon, the principal of St. Clare’s National School did a splendid job organising the fixture and settling any disputes.

All playing abilities were catered for and it was a sight to behold the youngest competitors deep in thought over their next moves. The tournament was an almighty success overall and every child went home with a prize or at least some valuable chess experience under their belt.

Everyone is already looking forward to the next big chess event and in the meantime: “Big congratulations to all the winners, participants and their teachers."
