The Munster Junior Chess Championships took place in the University Of Limerick on the 28th/29th January 2006, with over 100 young chess players from all over Munster and some visitors from Galway, Mayo and Kilkenny.
The event was organised by the Munster Junior Committee who would like to take this opportunity to thank Niall Mullooly who single handedly managed the under 8 event on Saturday.
To Mary Hanly who managed the under 12s, Stephen Danaher who managed the under 14s, Mary Mulvey & Joe Moroney, who managed the under 16/18s events.
To our resident photographer, Gerry Graham, who took photographs capturing some of the great moments. (These are available from members of the committee) and to all those who helped in any way with the set up and tidy up.
We were delighted and honoured to have Joe Browne from Cork to present all the trophies, as he has helped & played many juniors over the years.
A very special thanks to Una Mulvey and the UL chess club who helped the committee in their preparations for the event and throughout the weekend.
Last but by no means least we would like to thank all the players who were well behaved and a pleasure to deal with over the weekend; we wish you all success for the coming year in Chess.
The chess was once again of a very high standard, with all section winners having to work hard for there respective titles, but this did not stop many of the young players from having a very enjoyable weekend. As one parent said I never knew Chess was such a dirty sport referring to the state of clothes following the many soccer matches.
Some noteworthy performances over the weekend are worth mentioning namely the Sheehans from Cork who had 3 family members playing and 2 of them were playing on board 1 in there respective sections on Sunday, Thomas won the U12 with Michael 2nd in the under 10s.
The Cormicans from Galway who had 4 family members playing and who all played on the top boards.
Ronan Fenn followed his U8 victory last year with a win in the U10s as did Liam Normoyle last years U14 winner this years U16 victor, Steven Hanly last years U12 joint winner this years U14 Winner.
