Irish Glorney Cup team, Dublin 1963. Back: P. Cassidy (manager), K. Ryan, B. Greer, R. Byrne. Front: P. Cafferky, S. Mooney, F. McMahon (captain), H. MacGrillen.

Frank McMahon, captain of the 1963 Glorney team, has sent in the photo on the right (full resolution). By beating England in the last round (the first time England had ever lost a match in the competition) they forced a 3-way tie for first place. There was great drama at the finish caused in part by the fact that both of Pat Cafferky's games were adjourned (in that era before allegro finishes). He had to play out first one game, against Wales, out of which he extracted a victory. Then he had to finish his England game with the match balanced at 2½ each. His second victory was the cause of great elation in the Irish camp. The late Hugh MacGrillen has described how he picked up Paul Cassidy (the Irish manager) and swung him around.

David McAlister has researched the history of the Glorney and Faber and uploaded the results to the Olimpbase site (look under other youth events). The Glorney started in 1948 when the president of the Leinster Chess Union, C. P. Glorney, donated a cup to the winner of a challenge match between Irish and English boys and has grown from there to include girls (the Faber cup) and other nations.
