The 38th Olympiad took place in Dresden Germany from November 12-25.
This page summarises Ireland's results and later will hopefully be
updated with comments from some of the players or officials on
their return from Dresden.
Some stats: 1270 players,
141 countries, 722 men (146 teams), 548 women (111 teams),
253 GMs, 65 WGMs, 176 IMs, 90 WIMs,
257 team captains, 120 arbiters, several hundred organisers and officials.

The Irish Men finished a respectable 60th out of 146, close to their
seeding but far from the record breaking Bled 2002 team,
despite all the Dresden players being members of that team.
Armenia retained the gold medal with Israel and USA in silver
and bronze positions. The top three seeds, Russia, Ukraine and China
were 5th, 4th and 7th respectively.
The Irish women had only 2 of their top players but still managed
to perform above their seeding. At one stage Gearóidín Uí Laighléis
on Board 1 was only one win away from a WFM title.
