Some of the things you should do before you consider playing in your first classic chess tournament
- Practice - especially tactics
- Play 15 min games - ideally in rapid tournaments
- Learn your main opening for White and two for black (against 1.e4 and 1.d4)
- Learn the key endgames
- Learn to use a chess clock
