Team Captains for Olympiad 2022


The ICU invites applications for the positions of Open and Women's team captains for the forthcoming 2022 Chess Olympiad to be held in Moscow, Russia. The dates of the event are July 26 to August 08, 2022. The Olympiad organizers provide free board and lodging, and the ICU will pay a contribution towards the flights that will cover most if not all of the cost.

Successful candidates should have a valid passport with which to travel, a keen interest in, and some experience of international chess, good communication skills and familiarity with the FIDE laws of chess and general regulations. Some expertise or knowledge of modern chess preparation methods and programs such as Chessbase would be a bonus.

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria and should keep this criteria in mind when making their application. Successful candidates will be required to be current members of the ICU and to obtain a FIDE TRG licence prior to the event.

The closing date to submit your interest in captaining either team will be February 28th, 2022 *(EXTENDED to March 31st see below). Please email the ICU secretary ([email protected]).

After a consultation period with the selected players, the ISC will make their recommendations to the Executive Committee and on approval, candidates will be notified by the secretary of the ISC.

The ICU may appoint a Head of Delegation who may be one of the team captains.

Updated Feb 28th: Further to the FIDE Official Statement of February 27th, the deadline for expressions of interest has been postponed until further notice and pending clarification of dates and venue.

*Updated Mar 26th: Further to the FIDE Announcement that Chennai is to host the 2022 Chess Olympiad, the final closing date for expressions of interest is confirmed as March 31st 2022.
