The Committee met on 5 occasions during the year to transact
the business of the Union.
The Chairman, Philip Hogarty, died in tragic circumstances in
early 2008. Gerry Graham replaced him and Michael Crowe replaced
Stephen Stokes who resigned as Vice-Chairman. Jobstown Chess Club
will run a tournament in memory of Philip which will be financially
supported by the Union.
The Union did not send a team to the European Championships
but is sending a men's and a ladies team to the Olympiads
in Dresden, Germany later this year with Mark Heidenfeld as
Head of Delegation. IM Mark Orr and Gearóidín Ui Laighléis will
represent Ireland at the World Mind Games in Beijing, China.
The Union was represented by Kilkenny and Rathmines at the
European Team Championships in Turkey last October while
our representatives at this year's event in Greece will be
Phibsboro and Galway. The Committee have decided to review
the arrangements for the Irish Team Championships which
decides the representatives for the European event.
The Committee agreed a programme of financial support for
suitable tournaments and that the availability of such
funding for other possible suitable tournaments should be
publicised. The Committee also agreed to consider whether
funding should be made available for rapid-play tournaments
and to consider establishing a policy of funding for junior
players representing Ireland abroad.
