The Leinster Chess Union's knockout cup competitions concluded recently with Elm Mount Chess Club retaining the Branagan Cup by beating Phibsborough 3½-2½ in the final. Drogheda Chess club "did the double" in the other two competitions by beating last year's winners Bray/Greystones 5-1 in the final of the William Brennan Cup and Elm Mount 4½-1½ in the Killane Shield final. The new format for the events with a group phase before the knockout stages of the competitions were reached proved to be particularly popular with the clubs as it guaranteed all entrants a minimum number of games in the events. The LCU envisage continuing with this format in the future.
