Tournaments Rated During 2005-2006 Season

SP-DBF’s created and sent to all Tournament Controllers

Rating List Published

September 2006 rating list hopefully to be released no later than 17th September – a deadline of 3rd September for all outstanding results to be received has been set.

Observations on Rating Officer’s Job

Generally the job has not been too daunting, mostly due to the help from the previous officer, Vincent Bissett – all his help has been gratefully received!

One point of note is of the growing amount of requests from individuals to have their foreign tournament performances rated. There have been requests for about 50 foreign tournaments to be rated over the past season. The problem with this is the amount of time that is spent rating one of these tournaments. It is no exaggeration to say that it is far easier and far less time consuming to rate one of the large weekend Irish tournaments than to rate one foreign event. I feel that maybe the time has come to charge a fee for this service – after all ICU membership only entitles members to have their ICU games rated.

One other point is the decision of the LCU to abandon the use of the League Master program to report their league results without discussing this with the ICU. The League Master program was developed by Ray O’Brien, who was also responsible for the ICU rating program, and was designed to create files from league results in acceptable format to be imported into the rating program. Fortunately, I was able to use the results that were provided by the LCU from their new program (after a bit of work!). It is quite disappointing that the LCU should just charge ahead with such a decision without the courtesy to check whether the ICU can actually use the information they provide.
